Chiropractic is an alternative-medicine health profession that concentrates on disorders of the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system that cause specific symptoms or adversely affect overall health and wellness. Doctors of Chiropractic are often called upon to treat conditions such as neck, back or joint pain, headaches or neuromuscular conditions such as fibromyalgia. Chiropractic is a safe, natural and drug-free approach to relieving pain and improving general health.
Chiropractic care starts with a physical exam and then proceeds to diagnosis and treatment. Treatment usually consists of either hands on adjustments or adjustments using very specialized instruments to affected areas, and may also include recommendations for physical therapy, diet, exercise or other lifestyle changes. Doctors of Chiropractic use familiar tools such as lab tests, X-rays and MRIs or other medical imaging techniques to help diagnose a patient’s condition.
Chiropractic is often the first treatment of choice for conditions such as back pain. It may also be used as an additional treatment in support of other medical therapies for certain conditions that cause musculoskeletal pain as a symptom.
Chiropractic is widely recognized as a safe and effective therapy. It is non-invasive, does not require drugs and has an excellent safety and success record. Most insurance plans cover the cost of chiropractic care without referrals, and chiropractors often have admitting privileges at hospitals and medical facilities.
Spinal manipulations or adjustments, the cornerstone of chiropractic treatment, uses hands or very specialized instruments to restore mobility to joints that have become misaligned or lost range of motion or flexibility due to an injury of the surrounding tissue. These misalignments are called vertebral subluxations.
Chiropractic adjustments are equally effective whether the issue stems from repetitive stress or a sudden injury. Regardless of the source of the injury, the damage causes pain and inflammation that reduces mobility. Realigning the musculoskeletal system reduces pain and inflammation, reduces nerve compression and helps to promote healing which aids in restoring the joint to proper function.
Chiropractic adjustments are not usually painful or uncomfortable, although some patients may experience slight soreness after an adjustment. This discomfort is similar to what a person might feel after unaccustomed exercise. Discomfort usually resolves on its own within 24 to 48 hours.
The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society recommend chiropractic care to patients suffering from prolonged or chronic pain. In fact, studies show that chiropractic care achieves equal or better results in relieving pain or improving bodily function than other typical treatments.
Common Conditions Treated by Chiropractic
Many people think of chiropractic only in terms of back pain, but the range of conditions treatable by chiropractic adjustment is extremely varied. Chiropractic adjustments are highly controlled yet individualized processes that the doctor personalizes to treat each patient’s unique physiology and symptoms.
Following are just a few conditions that respond extremely well to chiropractic:
Many forms of arthritis are caused by excessive wear on the joint. Chiropractic helps prevent arthritis by helping to ensure proper alignment and relieving joint stress. Once the patient has arthritis, chiropractic can help relieve the pain by improving joint alignment to prevent painful stress.
Relief of back pain through spinal manipulation is the most widely known of uses of chiropractic. Ensure that the discs and vertebrae are properly aligned relieves back and neck pain, reduces inflammation and relieves stress on other parts of the body that work to compensate for the spinal issue.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive stress injury resulting from overuse or improper use of the hand and wrist. Doctors of Chiropractic treat carpal tunnel syndrome through manipulation of the affected wrist, elbow and even the upper body to realign the joints and reduce painful inflammation. The doctor may also prescribe ice, ultrasound therapy or wrist supports.
Disc problems may include degeneration, herniation or tearing. Symptoms are pain and tenderness in the back, neck, shoulders or even the hips and legs. Chiropractic manipulation helps relieve the inflammation and pressure that cause the pain and has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for disc problems.
Fibromyalgia causes pain and tenderness in various points all over the body. As a result of the pain, patients tend to avoid using the painful body part, which puts additional stress on the spine, neck and shoulders. Chiropractic care can alleviate the pain and prevent injury.
There are many causes of headaches, among them tension and poor posture. Chiropractic care can help to resolve headaches that originate in the neck or shoulders. The Doctor of Chiropractic may also discuss the ergonomics of daily activities with the patient and make recommendations to prevent further problems.
Aging, daily activities and injuries may all contribute to neck pain, which can be debilitating in its intensity and which limits many daily activities. Chiropractic care can relieve the pain through a very carefully controlled cervical manipulation calibrated to prevent further injury while relieving the cause of the pain.
Sciatic starts in the lower back and the often-intense pain travels down one or both legs. Sciatica occurs due to compression of the sciatic nerve. Chiropractic care to relive this pressure may include manipulation, ultrasound, ice or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, which is painless and effective.
